Luis Enrique and Spain Part Ways After FIFA World Cup Elimination
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed that Luis Enrique has left his role as the manager of Spain’s national football team. They released a statement confirming the development.
Spain have also announced who will succeed Enrique as the new manager of Spain’s national football team. They have promoted Luis de la Fuente from his role as the manager of the U21 side of Spain.
The European heavyweights had kicked off their FIFA World Cup 2022 campaign with a stellar 7-0 win over Costa Rica in a Group E fixture. However, things went downhill for Luis Enrique and co. from there.
They took on Germany in their second match at Qatar World Cup 2022 and shared points with them after playing out a 1-1 draw. Spain followed that up with a 2-1 defeat to Japan in their third Group E match.
However, despite the defeat to Japan, Spain qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2022 round of 16 with a second-place finish in Group E. They earned four points from three matches in Group E, the same number of points as Germany. However, Spain edged out Germany to second place courtesy of a superior goal difference.
Luis Enrique’s men took on Morocco in the FIFA World Cup 2022 round of 16. After a goalless 90 minutes, the game went to extra time. Both Spain and Morocco failed to find a goal in the 30 minutes of extra time and the game headed to the penalty shootout.
Morocco defeated Spain in the penalty shootout as they scored three of the four kicks they took, while Spain missed all three kicks they took. For Spain, Pablo Sarabia, Carlos Soler, and Sergio Busquets stepped up to take their kicks in the penalty shootout.
Sarabia hit the post, while Soler and Busquets saw their penalties saved by Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou as Spain crashed out of FIFA World Cup 2022.
