Manchester United News: Erik ten Hag on Cristiano Ronaldo & Harry Maguire’s Red Devils Future
Manchester United news: Manager Erik ten Hag insisted both Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire still have a future at the club after he dropped them to the bench for their Premier League clash vs Liverpool.
Ten Hag made four changes to the side that started in their 4-0 defeat to Brentford. The Dutch manager dropped Ronaldo and Maguire to the bench and replaced them with Raphael Varane and Anthony Elanga. Ten Hag also benched Fred and Luke Shaw, with Scott McTominay and Tyrell Malacia coming in for them.
Ten Hag’s changes paid off as Man Utd inflicted a 2-1 defeat on Liverpool at Old Trafford. With the victory, Red Devils secured their first points of the campaign, having lost their first two games.
Ronaldo made an appearance off the bench towards the end of the game, replacing Marcus Rashford in the 86th minute. Maguire, though, had to watch the entire game from the stands as Varane and Martinez formed an effective partnership.
However, speaking after the match, Ten Hag insisted both Ronaldo and Maguire have a future at the club.
“I don’t have to mention Harry Maguire and Ronaldo, they are amazing players, and they will play a role in the future and the short future as well.”
Maguire has also been linked with an exit, with Chelsea reportedly interested in the England international. However, Man Utd have insisted the club captain is not for sale.
Meanwhile, it was Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford, who scored for Man Utd in their win over Liverpool. Sancho put Man Utd ahead in the match in the 16th minute. He received the ball from Anthony Elanga inside the box and left James Milner on his backside with a dummy before slotting it home.
Rashford made it 2-0 after Anthony Martial played him in the 53rd minute. Rashford finished off the counterattack with a clinical striker past Alisson Becker.
Man Utd now have three points from their first three fixtures, and faces Southampton in their next game.
