Manchester United Transfer News: Michael Owen’s Take On Whether Cristiano Ronaldo Will Leave Club

Manchester United Transfer News: Michael Owen believes Cristiano Ronaldo will stay at the Old Trafford outfit unless the Red Devils can find a ‘big replacement’ for the Portuguese superstar.

Ronaldo has been linked with an exit from Man Utd this summer. Multiple reports have claimed Ronaldo has asked the Red Devils to allow him to leave should they receive a suitable offer.

Ronaldo also was not part of Man Utd’s pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia. The Portuguese international missed the tour due to ‘family reasons.

Ronaldo has, however, since returned to training. He played in the first half of Man Utd’s pre-season match vs Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford. The Portuguese also featured for the Red Devils’ in their Premier League 2022/23 season opener vs Brighton & Hove Albion. However, the 37-year-old did not make it to the starting XI, and only came on as a substitute in the second half to replace Fred as Man Utd lost 2-1.

Owen says ‘noises coming out suggests’ Ronaldo will stay at Man Utd beyond the summer transfer window. He also thinks Ronaldo will not leave the club unless Man Utd has ‘somebody big to replace him.

The former Man Utd striker added: “If he goes, they are very light in attacking areas, and the number of goals he scored last season – how do you replace that?

“[Anthony] Martial’s come back, [Marcus] Rashford needs to do something as he can’t have another season like last season, and [Edinson] Cavani has left. It’s not very exciting. Especially if Ronaldo leaves as well and they don’t get anyone in.

“So I think he will stay unless they have somebody big to replace him.”

His current contract with Man Utd expires next season, but there is an option to extend it for another year. It remains to be seen if Ronaldo will seal an exit from Man Utd before the summer transfer window closes.

Meanwhile, Man Utd will be hoping to earn the first points of their Premier League 22/23 season when they travel to Gtech Community Stadium to take on Brentford in their next match. The match will be played on August 13, at 10:00 pm Indian Standard Time. Brentford comes into the match having held Leicester City to a 2-2 draw in their opening match of the season.
