Matthijs de Ligt Transfer: Netherlands International Speak Out on Chelsea’s Interest Last Summer
Matthijs de Ligt joined Bayern Munich from Juventus during last summer’s transfer window. De Ligt spent three seasons with the Italian club between 2019 and 2022. He played 117 games (in all competitions) during his time at the Allianz Stadium, registering eight goals and three assists.
The 23-year-old helped Juventus win one Serie A title, one Coppa Italia and one SuperCoppa Italiana. De Ligt won the Golden Boy award in 2018 and was included in the UEFA Champions League Team of the Season 2018-19. He also won the Kopa award in 2019.
The Netherlands international Matthijs de Ligt has revealed why his transfer to Chelsea never materialise before joining Bayern Munich last summer.
Speaking to the media, he said: “It’s amazing, I’m having a really nice time at Bayern. I feel already at home. Chelsea interest last summer? I didn’t speak to them. It wasn’t close with me but maybe it was with the clubs. I didn’t speak to Chelsea] this summer.
Chelsea lost defenders Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen for free last summer. Then-manager Thomas Tuchel were interested in bolstering his backline before the start of the current season. Matthijs de Ligt was among his top transfer targets in that regard. However, the transfer failed to materialize, and he eventually signed Wesley Fofana from Leicester City and Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli.
Chelsea have shown interest in signing him recently. They could make an approach to sign Matthijs de Ligt during the January transfer window. Speaking to the media recently, Dumfries addressed Chelsea rumours.
