Newcastle United news: The Toons close to signing Loris Karius
Big things were expected from Karius when he joined the Reds in the summer window of 2016. However, he struggled to make his mark at Anfield, playing just 29 league games for the Reds.
The former Germany youth international made two terrible mistakes during the UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid in 2018. The game more or less ended his Reds career and he failed to feature in a competitive game for the club after that.
The Merseysiders loaned him out to Besiktas and Union Berlin respectively, before allowing him to run down his contract this summer.
The Tyneside club is currently short of goalkeeping options after the injury to Karl Darlow. The former Nottingham Forest goolie tore his ankle ligament in a training session on Wednesday.
Eddie Howe currently has only Nick Pope and Mark Gillespie as senior goalkeepers available to him. If the transfer does go through, Karius will serve as a backup to Pope until Darlow returns to full fitness.
Diogo Costa is another player who is set to return to the Premier League. The former Spain international has completed his medicals and could officially join Wolverhampton Wanderers before the end of the week.
The Wolves have identified Costa as a short-term replacement for Sasa Kalajdzic, who suffered an ACL injury last week. Costa previously enjoyed a successful spell with Chelsea between 2014 and 2017.
He played 89 league games during his time at Stamford Bridge, scoring 52 goals. The now 33-year-old attacker helped the Blues win two English Premier League titles, along with one Football League Cup.
The Brazil-born Spaniard was part of the 2014-15’s Premier League Team of the Season and was also named PFA Premier League Player of the Month twice.
