Portugal FA Issue Statement After Reports Cristiano Ronaldo Threatened to Leave FIFA World Cup 2022
Portuguese newspaper Record reported on Thursday that Cristiano Ronaldo threatened to leave the World Cup after a heated discussion with Fernando Santos. The report further said Ronaldo eventually backtracked on his threat.
Portuguese FA insisted ‘at no time did’ CR7 threaten to leave the national team during the FIFA World Cup 2022.
“The FPF wants to clarify that at no time did national team captain Cristiano Ronaldo threaten to leave the national team during the tournament in Qatar.
“Cristiano Ronaldo continues to build on his unique record of service to the national team, which should be respected and which attests to his unquestionable degree of commitment to the national team.”
Meanwhile, Fernando Santos played Goncalo Ramos in place of Cristiano Ronaldo against Switzerland as Portugal made eight changes to the side that slumped to a 2-1 defeat to South Korea in their third Group G match.
Goncalo Ramos made the most of the opportunity as he scored a hat-trick and registered an assist as Portugal ran riot against Switzerland. Goncalo Ramos also became the first player to score a hat-trick at FIFA World Cup 2022.
Meanwhile, Portugal takes on Morocco in the FIFA World Cup 2022 quarter-finals. Morocco sealed their place in the quarter-finals after pulling off one of the shocks of the tournament as they eliminated Spain in the round-of-16.
