Sevilla Replaces Julen Lopetegui With Jorge Sampaoli

Reports were suggesting that the Spanish giant was looking at other options before the official statement came out.

The former Real Madrid boss guided the Sevilla team to the Champions League football by finishing 4th in the table.

The Spanish manager joined Sevilla in 2019 and helped his Spanish side to lift the Europa League trophy for a record sixth time by beating Inter Milan in a 3-2 scoreline in the final.

Emotional Lopetegui has bid farewell to Sevilla fans who did chant his name after the game. The manager also said that he felt “sadness and pain” after being sacked. Lopetegui also told: “I am grateful to the whole of Sevilla, their fans, the players who have given me three marvellous seasons”.

According to Sevilla’s official statement, “Lopetegui ends a successful era, with three magnificent campaigns in which the team accomplished all their objectives with flying colours, and a fourth season in which results did not come, with Sevilla on five points of a possible 21 in La Liga,”

They also added: “Lopetegui will stay forever in the top-tier of Sevilla’s history for the brilliant triumph of the club’s sixth Europa League in the 2019-20 season.”

The club is currently in the disappointing 17th position in the league table with just 5 points in 7 games. The Spanish club has grabbed just one point from their three Champions League group matches.

Sevilla started this season by losing Jules Kounde and Diego Carlos. One of their main attackers Lucas Ocampos joined Ajax on a loan deal. Since 2002, the Red-Whites have lost four consecutive games at home ground.

The team statement suggests: “Jorge Sampaoli and Sevilla FC have come to terms with the Argentine coach to take over as the head coach of the first squad. He agreed to a deal that ran through June 30, 2024”.

Lopetegui has long been linked with many English Premier League clubs. Before appointing Ten Hag, Manchester United was considering appointing him. At this moment Wolves are also considering the former Spain manager after sacking Bruno Lage.

Wolves are not hurrying any decision to appoint Lage’s successor. Steve Davis and James Collins will take charge of Saturday’s game at Chelsea.
Sevilla will meet Athletic Bilbao on Saturday in the upcoming La Liga fixture.
