Wayne Rooney Makes Phil Foden Claim Ahead Of 2022 World Cup

England manager Gareth Southgate has already named the Three Lions’ 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup. England are in Group B at the Qatar World Cup, with the Three Lions’ drawn alongside USA, Wales and Iran.

The Three Lions begin their 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign by taking on Iran on November 21st in a match that kicks-off at 6:30pm Indian Standard Time.

Writing in his Sunday Times column, Rooney picked his England starting XI for their game against Iran. That XI features Foden, who has not quite been able to replicate his club form for England.

He creates chances, he scores goals. He hasn’t quite done it for England what he does for City but I think he’s got everything you need and that technically and ability-wise he’s the best player we’ve got,” Rooney wrote in his Sunday Times column.

How would Foden operate in my team? With the right winger coming inside, I would keep Foden wide on the left side and get him getting at players, committing players one v one, and putting crosses into the box, which he’s so good at.

Meanwhile, Rooney’s England starting XI for their match against Iran has Jordan Pickford between the sticks. John Stones and Harry Maguire form the centre-back partnership in the XI Rooney picked, with Luke Shaw and Trent Alexander-Arnold occupying the full-back positions.

Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillip feature in the XI as defensive midfielders. Foden, meanwhile, features on the left wing. He wants either Raheem Sterling or Bukayo Saka to start on the right wing for England against Iran.

Jude Bellingham also makes it to the England XI Rooney picked, with the Borussia Dortmund star occupying the role of an attacking midfielder. Harry Kane, meanwhile, starts up front.

Wayne Rooney’s England XI vs Iran: Formation: (4-4-1-1): Pickford; Alexander-Arnold, Stones, Maguire, Shaw; Saka/Sterling, Rice, Phillips, Foden; Bellingham, Kane
