Xavi Insists Frenkie de Jong Did Not Want to Leave Barcelona For Manchester United

FC Barcelona manager Xavi has insisted that Frenkie de Jong wanted to stay at the Catalan outfit despite Manchester United’s interest in the midfielder in the 2022 summer transfer window.

Frenkie de Jong attracted transfer interest from Manchester United in the 2022 summer transfer window as the Red Devils looked to reinforce their midfield department.

However, Frenkie de Jong wanted to stay in Barcelona, and Manchester United failed in their pursuit of the Dutchman despite the negotiations with the Catalan outfit.

Now he’s our player, I’m really happy and satisfied with his performances, his leadership. He’s in a very good moment, like the team. I think Frenkie is enjoying on the pitch and this is the most important thing.

De Jong has a contract that runs until 2026 with Barcelona. That means he has more than three years left on his current deal with the Spanish behemoths.

Meanwhile, the first leg of the Europa League knockout rounds play-off between Barcelona and Manchester United kicks off at 11:15 pm Indian Standard Time on February 16.
