Xavi Reacts to Real Madrid’s Defeat to Villarreal Ahead of Barcelona vs Girona
FC Barcelona manager Xavi said their upcoming game against Girona is a great opportunity as a win would take them 15 points clear of Real Madrid in the race for the La Liga title.
Barcelona sits atop the La Liga points ahead of defending champions Real Madrid, and the Catalan outfit are the favourites to win the title this season. Barcelona currently enjoys a 12-point lead over Real Madrid at the top of the La Liga table.
Speaking ahead Barcelona vs Girona La Liga fixture, Xavi said a win in their upcoming game would be another step forward in their pursuit of a league title and that it would give them an important lead over Real Madrid.
“We want to be champions and tomorrow would be another step forward. It would give us a very important margin. It will be a complicated game, Míchel is working very well, but it will cost us for sure, with the help of the fans and playing at home, with the defeat of Madrid motivates us even more to win.”
Xavi also spoke about Barcelona’s defeat to Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-final second leg. Real Madrid romped to a 4-0 win in that game to knock Barcelona out of Copa del Rey.
Xavi said: “We’ve analysed the reasons for the mistakes we made, especially in the first half. In the first half, we had to be ahead on the scoreboard, you can’t forgive so much and when you forgive, Madrid are the team that makes you pay most dearly for it.
“We’ve turned the page and we’re focusing on La Liga. When we were knocked out of the Champions League we made a pact to win the league, it’s the fairest competition because it gives you the work of the whole season. We are focused on the eleven games.”
Meanwhile, the match between Barcelona and Girona will kick off at 12:30 am Indian Standard Time on April 11.
