Arsenal News: Three talking points from Arsenal’s win over Zurich

The Gunners had a nervous start to the match. Arteta’s second choice goalkeeper Matt Turner was clearly struggling in the first few minutes and was on the verge of gifting a goal. But as soon as Marquinhos drew the first blood, Arsenal became more dominant.

The Gunners dominated the rest of the half but could not increase their lead. In the second half, Zurich came with intensity and earned a penalty which Mirlind Kryeziu converted. However, soon after that, Arsenal again took the lead as Eddie Nketiah who was at fault for conceding the penalty scored with a header. Zurich then came out with everything but the Gunners were able to see off the danger.

Here are the three talking points from this pulsating tie.

Marcus Vinicius Oliveira Alencar or Marqunihos joined Arsenal from Brazilian club Sao Paulo at the start of the season.

The Brazilian finally got his chance yesterday and showed what he is worth. In his first match with the club, he showed great calmness and composure in front of the goal and gave Arsenal the lead. Marqinhos’ goal helped Arsenal to shrug off their nerves and take control of the game. In the second half, he provided a brilliant cross to his strike partner Nketiah who made no mistake to convert it into a goal.

With this brilliant outing, the Brazilian has now made sure that he gets game time in the upcoming matches and remains in the thick of things.

Arsenal’s 23-year-old English forward Eddie Nketiah came in clutch to secure three points for the Gunners. Throughout the match, the whole spotlight was on him as he was a part of all three goals in the match.

In the first half, the English forward played a very intelligent pass to Marqunihos which the Brazilian finished with great composure. However, he soon became a villain for the Gunners as it was he, who committed the mistake to hand Zurixh a penalty.

However, the English forward soon made amends for his mistake and headed Arsenal home. Nketiah has so far got 40 starts for the Gunners and has netted 19 goals. The forward’s good display in the attacking third will only make Arteta happy.

22-year-old Portuguese midfielder Fabio Vierra had an outstanding outing in his full debut. Vierra since joining the Gunners featured in only one match previously when he put up a spirited display in their last match against United. However, this time around he was finally named in the starting eleven and given a chance to show his mettle.

Played as an attacking no.8, Vierra was the link that connected Arsenal’s forward lineup with their midfield. It was Vierra who created Arsenal’s first goal and started the counterattack. Vierra dribbled through the Zurich players and found Nketiah with a brilliantly played ball. Vierra throughout his stay kept the Zurxih midfield busy and suffered many rough tackles in the process.
