Juventus and Roma in Race for Jose Maria Gimenez
Born in Toledo, Giminez started his football career at the academy of the Uruguayan club Danubio.
The centre-back then graduated from the Danubio academy and was promoted to the main team. Giminez played one season for the Uruguayan side before joining the Spanish team Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2013.
The defender gradually established himself in the starring lineup and became one of the most important players for the Spanish team. He won two La Liga titles, one Europa League title, One European Super Cup, and one Spanish Super Cup title. Giminez has made over 70 appearances for his national team Uruguay.
After dominating the Serie-A for over a decade, Juventus are currently going through a transition period. The Bianconeri have failed to finish in the top three during their last two terms. And now they have got a poor start to their current season.
The Bianconeri have won only six out of their first twelve matches. They have gathered twenty-two points and are in the eighth position in the table. Juventus’ performance on the European stage has been even poor.
For the first time in their history, Juventus lost five out of their six group-stage matches in the UEFA Champions League. This also includes a loss against the Israeli side Maccabi Haifa. As a result, they have crashed out of the group stage and will take part in the Europa League.
Now Juventus management understands their situation very well. They want to bolster their squad with the arrival of quality players in the January transfer window to recover their season. Meanwhile, due to Atleti’s financial issues, they want to sell Gimenez in January to get some funds.
This comes as a huge opportunity for Juventus who can get the defender if they make an offer of around €35-40 million. Apart from Juventus, another Serie-A side AS Roma are also interested in the 27-year-old defender.
Under Mourinho, Roma are looking for a top-four spot. They are a huge admirer of Gimenez who provides robust defending. Hence Mourinho’s side are considering bidding for the defender. So if Juventus want to sign him, they will have to move fast.
Now Juventus will face Inter Milan in their next match.
